The Planetary Diet

The current predominant dietary pattern is characterized by high consumption of processed foods, calories, added sugars and animal products. It is unsustainable since the production of those foods contributes to an increase in greenhouse gas emissions and dramatic changes in land and water use. It is a major driver of environmental degradation and transgression of planetary boundaries.

The food process of what we consume influences the environment and determines the future of our planet like no other human activity.

In parallel, this dietary pattern contributes to overweight and obesity. Also, it is related to some diseases such as diabetes, heart disease and some types of cancer.

How to feed ourselves while taking care of the planet?

The Planetary diet is a concept developed to promote healthier eating habits that reduce environmental impact, so it’s also healthy for the planet.

This diet encourages people to consume more plant-based foods. Fruits, vegetables, legumes, whole grains, nuts and seeds should be a part of our daily diet. Instead, it aims to halve the consumption of animal products, added sugars and processed foods

As the EAT-Lancet Commission warns that many populations continue to face significant burdens of malnutrition. Obtaining adequate amounts of micronutrients only from plant-based foods can be difficult. Given these considerations, the role of animal products in people’s diets needs to be carefully considered in each context and within local and regional realities.

In addition, the Planetary Diet recommends eating organic and locally-grown food whenever possible. This is a way of supporting local and sustainable food production systems. It helps reduce the environmental impact of food production, as they use fewer chemicals and methods that have a lower environmental impact.

It also encourages people to reduce food waste and be mindful of the resources used to produce and transport food. Reducing food waste helps to conserve resources, reduce pollution, and reduce the environmental footprint of our food choices.

The EAT-Lancet Commission states that universal adoption of the planetary health diet would help prevent serious environmental degradation. Besides, it would avoid approximately 11 million human deaths per year.
